Wil reported in his monthly report that: “A customer came in looking for books on “andragogy” but I couldn’t find anything in the system under that subject. I went to Google and found out the term means adult learning (as opposed to “pedagogy”, child learning).” I also Googled this as the term is not in either dictionary at the desk, and came across this site Andragogy: Teaching adults . As you know, we’ve discussed the education process here on numerous occasions and I thought this article on the difference between adult learning and children’s learning was quite telling. Two things jumped out at me when I looked at the chart and they were both in the first line: “teacher” for adults and “instructor” for children, and children have fewer responsibilities. I thought these were interesting (as you know I’ve always felt that instruction vs. teaching was a major problem in our schools. That children have fewer responsibilities may be a very middle classed view of what is a very different reality in urban environments. I also thought that this is a good article for us to keep in mind as we work with adults on computer and other learning issues.
